THE PROPHECY OF THE OUTPOURING OF THE SPIRIT OF GOD
28 “And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;
Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions.
29 And also on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days. Joel 2:28-29
1. God will pour out the Holy Spirit on all flesh
a) The Holy Spirit came upon only a few people
b) Who were they?
i) Prophets
ii) Some Judges
iii) Some kings
c) But there was no general outpouring of the Spirit
2. The people who would be receiving this Promise
a) ”Sons and daughters”
b) “Old men and young men”
c) “Menservants and maidservants”
d) This means that many more people would receive the Spirit of God in the general outpouring
3. How would they be affected?
a) They would be like prophets who prophesied
b) God will speak to them in dreams and visions like the prophets
c) Their lives would become significant like the prophets of old
4. This prophecy
a) It was not fully understood
b) It remained unfulfilled
AN IMPORTANT EXPLANATION
15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper,
that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him;
but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.
25 “These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in
My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you,
My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John 14:15-18, 25-27
1. The Lord Jesus will ask the Father to give the Disciples “another Helper”
a) The Disciples were the followers of the Lord Jesus
b) They were True Disciples
c) They were Trained Disciples
d) They loved the Lord Jesus and kept His commandments
e) The False Disciples are the ones who depart from the Lord (John 6:66)
2. The Helper is the Holy Spirit
a) He is the Spirit mentioned in Joel 2
b) He will come and abide with the Disciples forever
c) He is the Spirit of truth that the world cannot receive
3. What the Spirit of God will do for Disciples
a) He will teach them further
b) He will cause the Disciples to remember all that they had been taught
c) He will be in the hearts of all Disciples
THE FULFILMENT OF THIS PROPHECY
1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Acts 2:1-4
1. The Spirit of God came upon the Disciples of the Lord Jesus
2. He empowered them
a) He gave them the ability to speak in foreign languages
b) This was an extraordinary event
c) The prophecy of Joel was fulfilled
d) The promise of the Lord Jesus was fulfilled
CONCLUSION
1. The Holy Spirit’s Ministry
a) He continues:
i) To teach
ii) To guide
b) But the special manifestation
i) What was recorded in Acts 2 was a historical fact
ii) It was not meant to be an everyday event
2. Appropriate lessons
a) We are to be disciples
b) We are to follow in the footsteps of the original disciples
c) We are to seek to be filled with the Holy Spirit
